34' Marine Trader Overloading

34' Marine Trader Overloading

Jim Blaney the owner of a 34’ Marine Trader was complaining of Heavy black smoke, overheating and poor performance. Ed Hislop from Cummins engines in Grand Rapids checked the engine and confirmed that the overloading was attributed to the propeller and not the engine.

Jim was referred to Holland Propellers in Michigan.

The original propeller was a 24 x 23 x 3 blade Hung Shen.

The details of the vessel were inputted into Prop Scan's propeller sizing software which revealed that the existing propeller did not have enough diameter or blade area and too much pitch.

Another problem faced was the limitation of how much diameter was allowed with the Keel and strut to the rudder.

Using the Prop Scan software we custom configured a propeller for the application. Sizing was a 24 x 18.5 x 5 blade propeller.

When the boat went back in the water Jim was amazed, No black smoke, No over-heating, much better speeds and power.

Jim is extremely pleased with the performance gains and that the engine is no longer overloading which means there is considerably less internal wear on the engine parts.

Jim plans on keeping the boat for some time and looks forward to considerable traveling with the boat next season.
